Teens fight alien war machines
WRONG WRONG WRONG
...But that was actually my first impression of Neon Genesis Evangelion when my best friend from high school showed me the first episode on an old VHS. I still have no idea how he got his hands on a copy; in those days in the mid 90s, anime wasn't shown anywhere on TV.
The first episode tells the story of Shinji Ikari, a young Japanese kid who is picked up by some government types to do their dirty work - pilot a giant, mechanical robot to fight off some invading alien thing called an "Angel." As any teenage dude can attest, controlling an unstoppable death robot is every fantasy come true.
As the series progresses, we learn more and more about these robots. It turns out, they aren't just metal - there is something organic and inhuman living inside them.
This scene is one of the most horrific scenes that turns this anime REAL dark, REAL fast. The moment where we realize that unholy truth about the robots. Although disconnected from it's power source, the robot springs to life in desperation, regrows a monstrous arm, and literally eats the invading Angel. If this wasn't a WTF moment for you, you probably weren't paying attention.
We later learn that the soul of Shinji's mother is trapped inside this savage, biomechanical monstrosity.
